Proper way to install Linux?

$

Greetings,

My Vaio SVF152C29L came with Windows 8 preinstalled. Naturally this required that it comes with a number of partitions on the disk.

Seeing as how Windows 10 isn't running as smoothly as I'd like it to, I plan to upgrade to a Linux distribution shortly after graduating from my university.

The problem then becomes that I am now aware of these partitions; particularly the OEM, EFI, and system reserved partitions.

My requirement before upgrading is being able to reinstall my copy of Windows again at a later date (which I assume required either the OEM or reserved partition).

Another requirement would be to maintain the Assist functionality, even if I can't access it once I install Linux.

With that in mind, wouldn't it make sense to leave those partition en tact once I decide to install Linux?

To clarify: I do not plan to dual boot or install multiple operating system on my Laptop. I just want to be able to have assurance that once I install Linux, and if I ever need to, I can reinstall Windows via the partition that came shipped with my laptop.

The reason I am asking for this particular setup is because I'm aware that my product/license information is on one of the partitions.

I also want to assure that if I ever decide to reinstall or restore Windows on my laptop, that the Assist function maintains availability/functionality.

Should I leave those partitions alone when installing Linux or does it not matter for my purposes?

TIA

This update is not intended for use with your computer model

Hi,

This is driving me round the twist.

The keys to adjust the screen brightness don’t work, so I’m trying to install Sony Utilities.

My laptop is VPCEH2N1E so I downloaded from this page:

https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/vpc-series-vpceh2-series/vpceh2n1e/downloads/Z0005177

When I try to install it I get a message, ‘This update is not intended for use with your computer model’, even though it’s meant to be for VPC models.

I’ve looked in

C:\Windows\model.txt

and it says Model = “VPCEH2N1E” which is obviously what I’d expect.

Someone help me out with this please.

Unable to switch to SPEED mode, vpcsa3afx Vaio

On my VAIO VPCSA3AFX laptop, I'm unable to switch to SPEED mode and thus unable to use it for the reason I bought it - to play games.  The core problems seems to be that the Display Adapter is stuck using the Intel HD 3000 driver, with no mention of the Radeon 6630M graphics chip/driver that this laptop should also have or be able to use (I'm still fuzzy on whether or not this laptop has both an onboard Intel graphics chip AND a Radeon 6630M, or if it's a single chip that simply switches using one driver over another depending on whether you want it to be in Stamina or Speed mode).

In any case, I've done everything I can think of to get it to recognize the 6630M, removing the Intel drivers multiple times and trying to manually install the latest/greatest (from 2012 - thanks Sony!) graphics driver .exe from the Sony website to no avail.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

I'll keep this short, I need actual real drivers for an old Sony Vaio PCG-sr27 laptop running Windows Millennium

The """""Drivers and Software""""" page contains zero things that actually work with a clean install of ME

and the meg on the side of the page says that Sony doesn't sell recovery cds for anything under Windows 7 anymore

is there any way for me to find these drivers?

Touch Screen Not Working On~> Sony VAIO SVJ20237CXB 20-Inch Mobile All-in-One Touchscreen Desktop

Hi,

My touchscreen is no longer working. I know that the common thing to do is to go into Device Manager, make sure no options are hidden > Human Interface Devices >  HID Compliant Touch Screen and enable that feature. However, even though this is an All-in-One Touchscreen Desktop, there is NO HID Compliant Touch Screen option to disable/enable, it simply isn't listed there. There are quite a few HID-compliant vendor-defined device and HID-compliant system controller listings, they just don't seem to be specified, though each of them looks enabled already, whatever they are (it's hard to tell when they're not labeled).

And of course I have also cleaned the screen very carefully =)

Additionally, while I did manage to get to Tablet PC Settings, it says that there is no Pen or Touch input available for this display, so the calibration is greyed out...but of course, this IS a touchscreen all-in-one =/ HELP! lol. It's sort of important that I get this feature going again for my work.

I see issues of this nature going back several years, which has me hoping that some sort of fix has been put out by now, since the only thing I haven't done is a restore (which I'd rather not do) and I'm hoping folks can point the way to that if it exists (I've searched for hours, and finally decided to post here).

Thanks in Advance for Any Help Offered,

Thoughtfully,

Charlotte (Celticharper1)

Limited access internet connection

Hello,
My Vaio went mad 3 days ago and is not connecting to the internet no matter what i do.

What happened was, all of a sudden both the graphics driver and the network adapter driver went missing, i reinstalled them both but only the graphics card worked, since then i have tried: system restore, reinstalling drivers several times, removing them completely then reinstalling again, another system restore.

For 3 days now i'm getting no internet access, wifi or network cable, other devices work just fine on the same network, my laptop has the same problem with other networks.
Please help i can't do any kind of work now, it's essential for me to get back online.

Thank you all

Help for Vaio SVE14A390X - Cannot Access Recovery, cannot boot to safe mode

$

I have a Sony Vaio SVE14A390X.  Over the years I have completely done many factory restores on the laptop whenever I had issues.  A few times lately I had to enter Safe Mode then fix errors.

However, about a week ago, I attempted to boot the computer and it wouldn't boot.  It would give me the Blue Screen with the "frown face" and tell me there are errors but the system will try to fix and restart.  Then I would get a black Vaio Windows screen telling me it was attempting advanced recovery.  After that, it would just stay black screen...I left it on overnight once and still had the blank black screen in the morning.

I would turn off the laptop and then press the Assist button and attempted to enter the Windows Recovery mode (F10) to set up to boot into Safe Mode.  However when I pressed F10 or chose that option, I would only get a black screen.

I tried various settings in the BIOS to no avail.

I have a set of discs I created when I got the laptop but the computer doesn't want to seem to boot from the discs.

I can't get a command prompt to be able to press F8 to enter the legacy change and boot into Safe Mode.

At this point, I am lost.

Is there a way to boot into Safe Mode without going through the Command Prompt option?  I have tried every way possible as suggested on the internet...

Is there a way to access the Recovery system other than the ways I have already tried?

My main issues are:

1.  Cannot boot normally

2.  If using the Assist button, I get a black screen if I choose the Recovery Options (F10)

3.  I cannot access Safe Mode, as I cannot open a Command Prompt

4.  BIOS changes don't seem to affect anything

5.  Will not boot discs

I am running Windows 8 and the computer is probably 4-5 years old.  In all that time I never had a problem I couldn't fix on my own but as I said, I have tried everything I can think of, as well as all possible suggestions on the Internet (which basically tell me to enter Recovery Mode or start in Safe Mode - neither of which I can do....)

If anyone has any suggestions, please message me and let me know!!!!  I don't want to lose all my data but if I have to I am willing as long as I can get the computer to function again.

Thanks in advance...

Driver Installation Problem GeForce 8600M GT/ Windows 7 Pro /

Hello,

i ran into some driver installation problems, hopefully you can point me to the correct way to solve these,...

1. Nvidia Graphic card driver installation problem, from its Nividia website, i was to find a 64 bits version driver for my GeForce 8600M GT driver, manually downloaded, however, I am unable to finish the installation, I also tried to use one of their auto update software but somehow it could not open correctly....( see photos)

2. I also notice, when i open the "My computer", it does not show my optical drive and SD card drive icon, looks like I am missing the drivers?

3. I tried using Sony's own website to download the drivers I need, but they all are Vista's and 32 bits based, any suggestions....Please....Thank you in advance...
